Batman has always been my favorite superhero. Why? Superman is an alien, Spiderman is a science experiment, Batman is a real guy (yes he’s fiction, but the character is just a man). Sure, he comes from money, but a lot of people are heirs, and they are not superhero crime-fighting butt-kickers! I admire Batman for his ethics, his actions, and his brand. I believe that there are some basic Batman principles we could all use in our professional life:
Improve the skill-set. In order to become a legendary hero, Batman honed his skills in hand-to-hand combat, agility, strength, weapons usage, and crime-solving. He is also committed to evolving his unique technologies to enhance his arsenal and ultimately squash bad guys. In business, you must constantly evolve – seek advice, learn, expand your network, improve technology, enhance strategy. You are nobody’s hero if you can’t adapt in an ever-changing economic landscape.
Use powers for good. Supreme fighting ability, advanced technology, fast cars, night vision – undoubtedly, Batman has an advantage. If he wanted to, the Dark Knight could go completely dark and use his powers to take your wallet, steal your car, beat you up, and make you cry – but he doesn’t. Instead he flexes his muscle to protect his city, to stand up for the little guy. In the business world there are so many people and companies that flex their muscle to break the rules take advantage – you might make a quick buck, but it’s not a long-term strategy. By operating with integrity you can build a reputation and people will want to work with you, they will seek you out. Maybe not with a spotlight in the sky, but they will find you.
Form a team. Although perceived as somewhat of a loner, Batman surrounded himself with experts like Alfred and Commissioner Gordon. Without the right people making necessary contributions, this hero would have been a little less super. Admit that you don’t know everything and find people that can help. Batman had a secret identity to protect, so trust was imperative – team up people you can trust.
Always answer the call. Everyone comes through in the clutch every now and then – but a hero gives a consistent valiant effort at all times. Shine a light in the sky, Batman saves the day – it’s just that simple. Let your clients or employers know what they can expect from you by showing a consistent effort. Let them know they can count on you.
Build a brand. Batman’s logo has evolved over time (see video below) but it is always easily recognizable, and undeniably the brand of The Caped Crusader. Dark, bold, powerful, Batman. Differentiate your brand and clearly define your value. Display that brand with a memorable image that speaks to your character and represents your identity. Simply put – be different and show your differentiator all the time.
Good luck prospective superheroes! Don’t trip on your cape.
